It was my birthday yesterday and we decided to hire Island Mountain Rides and do some sweet shuttles on Forbidden Plateau to celebrate last Saturday. Martin was our guide for the day and it was great to step aside and let him do all of the organizing. All I needed to do was pick six friends to join us and give them the place and time! All but two of the group had ridden the trails on Forbidden Plateau before so Martin gave them a rundown of what to expect before we set off. We managed to get two shuttles in. The first took us down Cabin Fever, Gecko, Green Dome, Black Dog, Transmission, and Cat Nip (same route as the video I did last week). The second shuttle we started off on 2 Sheiks and a Dog before hooking back into Cabin Fever and over to Slither. We finished that ride on Transmission and Cat Nip as well. A big thank you to Brock for being our shuttle driver! Without you we couldn’t have done the two shuttles. The star of the day was Marc, who is making a comeback after taking a hiatus from mountain biking for a [...]

I decided to catch last night’s ride on the GoPro to give myself some experience with this video editting stuff… This is one of my favourite trails on Forbidden Plateau called Cabin Fever, which is also a feeder for a sweet set of trails. The video captures upper Cabin Fever as well as parts of Gecko near the end. We continued on down Green Dome and connected back onto Cabin Fever, but unfortunately it was too dark in the trees to capture that bit. I hope you enjoy it!
Finally after weeks of waiting, Specialized announced which 8 lucky people got the honour of being on their trail crew and I was pleasantly surprised… The team is international! We have a rider from Whistler, BC and another from Australia (both named Matt). So there goes my theory about it being an Amercian team… The riders that got past the initial selection by the panel of judges were then subjected to a “trail test”. Each went riding with a person selected by Specialized to see if they really could ride and from there Specialized narrowed their list down to the final 8. From what I could see from reading the blogs of those who made the initial cut, the competition was fierce. Sadly none of the women made the crew. There was at least one woman who made the initial cut and I was sad to see she didn’t make it to the end. (Hmmmm… Maybe they’ll have a Safire Trail Crew??) Congrats to those that did make the team! Looks like a fun group of guys. To read who did make the cut and what they’ve been up to, please visit http://trailcrew.specialized.com/. On a totally different note, I found [...]

Well I didn’t get shortlisted. Although I’m really not surprised since I don’t lead group rides (not lately anyway) and I haven’t formed some sort of club outside of my own group of friends. However, I am surprised Colin wasn’t picked. I get to see how much effort he puts into maintaining http://cvmtb.com and organizing things for the Island Cup Series (DH and XC races here on Vancouver Island) among others, plus he’s a HUGE Specialized Fan. So now I’m REALLY curious to see who was picked. I’ve been keeping a close eye on @iamspecialized on Twitter and I suspect this crew is all American. I wonder if there’s liability issues for choosing people from other countries? Over the next year I plan on focusing on getting my business off the ground (I’m in the process of starting my own IT company) and recovering from my ankle injury. I’m hoping they have another crew for the 2011 Stumpjumper… I’ll absolutely try again! Now to stay tuned to see who made the cut…

I checked my Twitter account this morning and saw this: @iamspecialized Meeting in one hour to finalize Stumpjumper Trail Crew entries with the rest of the MTB team. Final announcement very soon.about 4 hours ago from TweetDeck I can’t wait to see who they choose! I’ve been watching the blogs come in and have my list of favourites (and of course Colin and I are on that list!) so it’ll be interesting to see who actually makes it… Interested in reading some of the blogs? You can find them here.

http://www.specializedriders.com/blog/1/post/show/2384 A chance to demo a 2010 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR for a year and all I have to do is write about it? Is this for real? Those were my exact thoughts when I heard about this contest so I figured, why not? I could start my blog by going on about my days riding with an old beater of a hardtail and bore you all with my cycling history… Instead I thought I’d tell you a little a story about when my life changed forever. It all started when I moved back to Vancouver Island in the fall of 2007 and a little trail called “Bucket of Blood”. This was my first real introduction to the world of mountain biking. The day started innocently enough. I got a call from a buddy of mine who knew I liked to mountain bike and he asked if I’d like to join them on a ride that day. It was a gorgeous fall day so of course I was up for it! After what seemed like hours of climbing up a logging road (it was really only 30 minutes or so), we finally got to a little “hike-a-bike” section which led to [...]
