It was my birthday yesterday and we decided to hire Island Mountain Rides and do some sweet shuttles on Forbidden Plateau to celebrate last Saturday. Martin was our guide for the day and it was great to step aside and let him do all of the organizing. All I needed to do was pick six friends to join us and give them the place and time! All but two of the group had ridden the trails on Forbidden Plateau before so Martin gave them a rundown of what to expect before we set off. We managed to get two shuttles in. The first took us down Cabin Fever, Gecko, Green Dome, Black Dog, Transmission, and Cat Nip (same route as the video I did last week). The second shuttle we started off on 2 Sheiks and a Dog before hooking back into Cabin Fever and over to Slither. We finished that ride on Transmission and Cat Nip as well. A big thank you to Brock for being our shuttle driver! Without you we couldn’t have done the two shuttles. The star of the day was Marc, who is making a comeback after taking a hiatus from mountain biking for a [...]

I decided to catch last night’s ride on the GoPro to give myself some experience with this video editting stuff… This is one of my favourite trails on Forbidden Plateau called Cabin Fever, which is also a feeder for a sweet set of trails. The video captures upper Cabin Fever as well as parts of Gecko near the end. We continued on down Green Dome and connected back onto Cabin Fever, but unfortunately it was too dark in the trees to capture that bit. I hope you enjoy it!
After riding in Idaho and Montana last summer, I can see why they close some of their trails when it rains. We’re lucky here in Cumberland since most of our trails are rideable year round, however there are some trails that need some TLC during the rainy season. I received the Facebook message from one of the trail builders reminding us that some of our trails are more susceptible to damage over the winter: There’s definitely something special about winter riding on the west (aka wet) coast. Mud, rain, wet roots, and slippery rocks – No doubt, some of my best rides have been in less than favorable conditions. It can add up to a really good time… And hell on the trails. Anyone who’s spent time on the trails in last few weeks will appreciate what I’m talking about. Even the best built trails, with either man made or natural drainage, take a pounding this time of year, and riders only make them worse. Now let me make this clear: This is by no means an attack on the trail builders. Additionally, I’m not saying we shouldn’t ride in the winter. What I’m saying is that as a group, [...]

I came across this video the other day by Gian Malar who was a racer at the BC Bike Race this year. He did a great job catching the Forbidden portion of the race on his helmet cam. The video starts off on the Bevan Trails, connects to Bears Bait, then continues on Two Sheiks (don’t be deceived, there’s a long ride up a logging road to get there!), Cabin Fever, Slither, Transmission, and Catnip. Some of my favourite trails… It’s approx 40 minutes long and definitely worth watching when you have a moment. Enjoy! BC Bikerace 2010 Day 2 from Gian Malär on Vimeo.

This past month has been awesome for some rare sights on the trails. Below are photos of the cool things I’ve seen over the past month. We’ve known for a while now that there are cougars in the area we ride on Forbidden Plateau, this is just the first time I’d seen tracks myself. Then less than a week later, I came across more markings and tracks… These ones shocked us since they were close to town, less than a 10 minute ride away. Then a little further down the trail we saw more tracks. We must have just missed the cougar when we were on Railroad, the markings were pretty fresh and these tracks led towards the trail. If you look closely you’ll see my glove is between two prints. After I took the photos of the tracks, a friend of mine saw 3 cougars on Forbidden Plateau while on a group ride. They were on a trail called Cliffe Ave, which isn’t far from Cabin Fever. So just a reminder to be aware and ride with care! Oh and make lots of noise too because there just might be… …a bear on the way to the trailhead! We [...]

After some heavy rains, unexpected snowfalls, and aggravated injuries I’m finally back on my bike! And I’ve discovered our local trailbuilders have been fairly busy… Over on Forbidden there are a few new trails, one great one is White Rabbit. It starts beside the Plunge and avoids the nasty part of that trail before it joins up with Lower Plunge just above Peckerhead. Great flowy trail. Cabin Fever has also been extended and now starts higher up in the same area as 2 Sheiks and Screamin’ Demon. This section of Cabin Fever is more of an XC trail with a couple of nice bridges and a canoe, not to mention a gap jump near the beginning of the trail. It’s a fun little section. Here’s the GPS info on where to find them: upper and lower cabin fever -> white rabbit -> lower plunge -> bears bait at EveryTrail Map your trip with EveryTrail There are also another two trails that come off Cabin Fever. One is called Slither and the other is called Rebel. Slither could easy become one of my favourite trails… Steep and flowy bits, love the combintation of the two! Rebel forks off from Slither and [...]

After last weekend’s ride I made a New Year’s Resolution to ride more and after waking to a half decent day (meaning we didn’t wake to the sound of rain bouncing off the windows) we finally got out on the trails again. We also thought it would be nice to ride downhill for a change of pace so we headed to one of my favourite trails, Cabin Fever. We hadn’t ridden Cabin Fever for quite a while and had heard reports that the snow level had gone up a fair bit so we jumped at the chance to get a ride in before the snow level dropped again. There were only three of us today: myself, Colin, and Pascale. Unfortunately we were just above the snow line but luckily the snow didn’t last for long and the trail was clear for the most part once we got into the trees. After Cabin Fever we headed over to Transmission and down to Bears Bait. Aside from a couple of downed trees, the trails were in really good shape. It felt good to be on Forbidden again and rides there over the winter months are a treat. It all depends on the [...]

We went for another awesome ride with friends on Forbidden last Wednesday and we couldn’t help but notice that more drainage work was done to lower Cabin Fever and Transmission is rideable! Looks like our friend Ryder* (not his real name) has managed to get out and do some more trail work… Ryder is the person responsible for building a lot of the trails we’ve been riding lately: Gecko, Green Dome, Cabin Fever, Black Dog, Transmission, Cat Nip, etc. There are some great stories behind how he named the trails. Maybe if we’re lucky he’ll tell us the stories behind them all? Ryder has done such a fantastic job that I thought I’d out him to say thanks We’re not the only ones who’ve been riding over on Forbidden lately and I know of several happy campers who like the trails he’s built as well. Hmmmm… I wonder what he’s working on next?

It’s been a busy couple of weeks so I apologize for the lack of posts. Luckily I’ve still been able to get out on a few rides on my bike! Most recently we marked my favourite trail, Cabin Fever, for night riding. There were a few spots where it was easy to get off the trail that caught us if we weren’t paying attention so if we were having problems, we knew others definitely were! (Although right now we don’t know if anyone else is doing it as a night ride…) Luckily Dodge City Cycles donated some reflectors for us to use so we loaded up with reflectors and nails and set out. It was a cold and wet night! I was so happy I brought an extra fleece… So after I was bundled up like the Michelin man we set off on the trail. It was also a chance to check the drainage work from the weekend before since it had been raining hard all week. A few minutes into the trail, I was also happy I wore my hiking boots! While the water was staying off the trail for the most part, there was just too much of [...]

It seems to be where I’m doing most of my riding these days. Not that I don’t like Cumberland, but the trails over on Forbidden Plateau are a bit more challenging, a lot more fun, and you can do them as a shuttle and skip the grueling climb! Not that I’m lazy, but climbing is still a challenge for my ankle… (And my heart and my lungs and… lol) We decided to do a new twist to a favourite trail last week and rode Cabin Fever as a night ride. What a fun time! It had also been raining quite substantially a couple of days previous so not only was the ride dark, it was wet… I had no idea that a good portion of the XC trail was on an old creek bed. It was good to see water under the bridges again though. However, it was disappointing to see someone had taken an ATV and made a mess of the access trail from the road. We’ll be cleaning that up shortly. Sunday was a group ride, 5 of us got together and decided to do Gecko, Green Dome, Cabin Fever, Dirty Jane, Black Dog, Transmission, Cat Nip, and [...]
