The winter months are slowly beginning to fade into a distant memory as fresh new growth emblazons the surrounding landscapes. The signs of spring help to revitalize our senses. The daylight hours seem to stretch moments longer with each passing day. The warmth of the sun’s beams are now finding more success in warding off any lingering chill in the air. With new life imploding around us, how can we not yearn for the endless days of summer and shredding bike parks? Busy day in and day out throughout the winter, Projekt Roam held on to their Silver Star film footage. Now, in the clutches of spring fever, Projekt Roam has put together their Silver Star Bike Park edit in hopes of getting fellow riders amped for summer biking season. Silver Star offers lift accessed, progressive trails, no crowds, crisp, alpine-scented air, expansive views; what more could a rider ask for?For more info, please visit www.gravityrideguide.com Busy day in and day out throughout the winter, we held on to our Silver Star film footage. Here’s how I spent the last third of the month… Day 21 was a busy one and I didn’t get a chance to ride until just before bed… Day 22 was another quick ride through the Northeast Woods. Day 23 was a ride through Cumberland. This was taken on a trail called Mama Bears, which is a historical trail that was once used by miners. You can still see old rail ties in spots along the trail as well. Day 24 was a wet and rainy one so … Continue Reading »

Here’s a quick status update for days 11 through 20 for me: Day 11 was a quick pedal with the dogs and warm enough for just a jersey! Day 12 was a tech fail. This isn’t the photo I meant to take, but the only photo I managed to take so here you go… Day 13 my friend, Pascale, and I did some trail scouting on Forbidden Plateau to see where the snow level was at.
Living in the Pacific Northwest we’re used to a fair bit of rain over the winter months and around this time of year the rainy season ends. We’ve been riding in short sleeves for a good part of April so when the rain returned this week it was a bit hard to take. Yesterday I was itching to get out for a ride and was hoping that if I waited the rain would stop. No such luck. Finally I gave up and loaded the bike onto the car, grabbed the dog, and set off. I’m thankful that we live in … Continue Reading »

After riding the south facing part of Forbidden Plateau last weekend which was snow free, my friend, Pascale, and I decided to check out the trails on the north side. That is where our all-mountain trails live and the trails that you’ll find in a lot of my videos. We’ve been pretty keen to get back on them and knew the snow had been melting fast on this side. We drove to the trailhead for Upper Cabin Fever, but after being greeted by this massive wall of snow, we decided that maybe it was better to start off at the … Continue Reading »

My 30 Days of Biking has been off to a pretty good start! A bit of lousy weather in the beginning but overall things are warming up. Finally! Here’s a quick rundown of how the first 10 days have gone so far… Day one was still pretty wet and muddy. Luckily our mud is pretty loamy so it just washes right off: Day two was another wet and miserable day. I was feeling lazy so it was just a quick pedal on the trainer before bed. Hey, it all counts! Day three was just a bike in the wild… Day … Continue Reading »

Pirjo Raits By Pirjo Raits – Sooke News Mirror Published: March 28, 2012 2:00 PM Updated: March 28, 2012 2:08 PM Big smiles erupted on the faces of cycling enthusiasts at the regular council meeting on March 26. Two groups, the Sooke Slow Food Cycle and the Sooke Bike Club, put in a proposal to the District of Sooke to build and maintain a bike skills park in John Phillips Memorial Park. Council recommended that staff develop and approve a Licence of Occupation Agreement with the Sooke Bike Club for the bike skills park. The Sooke Bike Club is intending to administer the site and work with staff to ensure the design, inspections and safety requirements are met and an acceptable plan for ongoing maintenance is developed and implemented. Insurance is to be taken care of by the licence holder, which is the bike club. The park area to be used for the bike skills park is 1.8 hectares and will be located between Rhodonite Drive to the north and Tara Road to the east with Townsend Road [...]

Below is a well timed press release I received from Projekt Roam this morning. The next planned trail day for UROC is coming up on April 1 at 11am. I hope to see you there! For more info, please see the Facebook invite. Dig It Camaraderie. Dust. Sweat. Exertion. Chatter and laughter. Embellished tales. But a few descriptives actively depicting a trail day in any biking community… As for ours, warmth emanates from the sun’s beams, making it easy for our trail crew to forget we are supposed to be in the clutches of winter. The steady, but offbeat pitter patter of various tools resounds through the air as each individual in our group, from youth to adult, lends a hand to help improve the quality of the local trails. Glancing over my shoulder, the antics of our five year old, self-appointed “foreman” brings an ear splitting grin to my face. I better make sure that my McLeod is doing more work than my vocal cords, lol. As I hack away at the hard packed soil, wisps of conversation reach my ears. One of the boys was speaking about how he tries to get one of his siblings outside into [...]

…Ride your bike every day for the month of April. It doesn’t matter for how far or what bike, it can be to the end of the block or even on the trainer, just as long as you ride your bike. Unlike Fight Club, the point of 30 Days of Biking is talking about it! It’s all about creating awareness and showing some bike love. The 30 Days of Biking concept was created in 2010 by Patrick Stephenson and Zachariah Schaap in Minneapolis and this will be the second year I’ve taken part. If you haven’t heard about it, you’re … Continue Reading »
