I was lucky to get the Loeka Kulla Bottoms, which are breathable, waterproof, riding pants for Christmas and couldn’t wait to try them out! I was out on the trails within a couple of hours of opening gifts. Below is a description of these pants found on Loeka’s website: Loeka’s seam sealed Kulla Bottoms will keep you warm, dry and riding all winter long and looking good. The light-weight, yet very durable 320D polyester can handle everything you and mother nature throw at it. While the articulated knees keep you moving freely and the mesh lining, sided zip vents keep you comfortable and cool. Staying active on your bike in winter just got stamped with no more excuses!! Okay, I confess, I had tried on these pants before Christmas and dropped a couple of “not-so-subtle” hints that I wanted them… I chose a size small instead of extra-small for one simple reason: they weren’t long enough in the area between my waist and my hips. The extra-small were the perfect length in the legs for me and were a great fit in the waist, but left me with an unsightly camel toe. Um, yeah… So a small it was! I’d [...]

I received this jacket in June, and although a soft shell is normally overkill this time of year, I actually needed it! It turned out to be the perfect weight jacket for our delayed summer this year. Columbia advertises the Hot to Trot Softshell as “one of those all-season essentials that you just can’t live without”, and worn with a fleece it definitely could be. However, the fabric is “100% polyester 3L Butter Softshell” so I wouldn’t recommend it on a rainy winter day, but it will protect you from light rain and drizzle. The Columbia website also has this to say about the Hot to Trot: “When piercing gusts and drizzle are the order of the day, the Hot To Trot keeps you cozy with windproof capabilities and Omni-Shield® advanced repellency”. With it being summer here, there was only one way to test the windproof capabilities, I took the top off my Jeep! Not only has our summer been delayed this year, it has also been cooler than normal. It also gave me an opportunity to test the Hot to Trot’s “Omni-Heat thermal reflective material”, which is a series of dots, made from reflective material similar to an emergency [...]

After using my neoprene kayak gloves as my winter gloves of choice, I decided it was time to find something that was a bit more waterproof… The neoprene gloves were warm, as long as you didn’t mind the wrinkled fingers at the end of the ride, but they didn’t do much to block out the wind. I found these gloves in a bike shop in Bellingham, WA and they looked like they might survive a We(s)t Coast winter. Winters here on Vancouver Island aren’t particularly cold, but they are definitely wet. I bought these gloves in February 2010 which was the perfect time to put them to the test. What didn’t work in my favour was the drier than normal winter (remember the Vancouver Olympic Committee trucking snow to the ski venues?). So I decided to wait before I posted a review until I was able to test them properly. And along came La Nina… Here’s how Specialized describes their gloves: Sized specifically for women, the Deflect uses soft shell materials with a wind- and rain-resistant upper for improved breathability, providing protection down to 50ºF/10ºC. They only provide protection to 10ºC? Seriously? I use them down to 0ºC and they [...]

I bought these shorts two years ago on a recommendation from my local bike shop. I had padded shorts that I wore commuting on my other bike that were fine for the 45 minute ride to and from work. I think I paid $40 for them and they seemed to do the trick, but then I started going on longer rides… My other shorts didn’t have a molded chamois or a 6 panel design, and quite frankly I didn’t know why I should spend the extra money for something that did. However I needed something so I begrudgingly bought them. Sugoi describes them as: Finally, a flattering, feminine cycling short – welcome the Lucky Short. Made of Helix fabric, the short allows for superior moisture transfer with its dry wick and breathable design. With its flat waistband, 6 panel contour, and mesh back pocket, the Lucky Short has everything you need for your ride. I agree 100% that these are a flattering cycling short. The flat waistband is extremely comfortable and sits just below the navel in front with a higher rise in the back. They are almost as comfortable as a good pair of yoga pants! The other thing [...]

I finally found an online t-shirt company that actually has original mountain bike t-shirts in women’s sizes! Holy! Why is it so hard to find companies that make women’s t-shirts? T-shirts in men’s sizes make us look frumpy. Seriously! And we like t-shirts too, really we do! Anyways, the company is in Baltimore and they have some pretty cool designs. I don’t normally order clothes over the internet but I liked the design and decided to take a chance. I was pleasantly surprised when I got it. It’s a good quality shirt and definitely the relaxed fit that they described. If you like a tighter fitting shirt, I would recommend ordering a size smaller than you normally would. I ordered a medium and it is definitely a looser fit than the other medium women’s t-shirts I have (just the way I like it!). Their website describes the shirt: Hey Chicas – Do you Live & Breathe to Ride? 4.5-ounce, 100% combed ring spun cotton, this Hanes brand T is light, breathable, and pre-shrunk. Set-in rib knit collar with double-needle coverstitching at neck. Contoured and side seamed for a relaxed feminine fit. Available in navy with white and magenta print. They [...]

I love these pants! Seriously! I know that’s not how you’re supposed to start a review but sometimes you just have to tell it like it is. So let me tell you the reasons why I am so in love with the Sugoi Bravo Capri… Aside from their stylish looks, they are incredibly functional with a hidden zipper and a drawstring waste. They also have a hidden, zipped back pocket with a mesh insert that gives it two separate areas for your MP3 player and keys. (Or at least that’s what I use my pocket for.) I have worn the Bravo Capris for everything from casual lounging to running and mountain biking. They are my pants of choice due to their ease of movement and comfort. The Sugoi website describes the Bravo Capri as being “made of Mobil fabric, the capri allows for superior moisture transfer with its dry wick and breathable design.” They weren’t kidding. I put them to the ultimate test by falling into the water while getting out of my kayak during an adventure race. Now I’m not sure if that’s what Sugoi had in mind for the superior moisture transfer, but after that test they also [...]

In December I was lucky enough to score a pair of these shorts through a contest on the Specialized Women’s Facebook page with a stunning drawing of my favourite ride. After receiving the shorts in the mail, I was anticipating my first ride to put them to the test. Especially after I took a good look at the chamois, instead of it being the same thickness in the front and back, most of the padding is in the back. They also have “upper thigh friction protection”, which is extra padding where the shorts meet the thigh. At first I thought I had gotten the shorts a size too small but after putting them on, they were a perfect fit (the sizing chart on Specialized’s website is bang on). Here is the information Specialized has posted on their website The first ride I did was a quick 45 minute ride to check out the condition of our local trails (we recently lost several trails to logging) and at first I wasn’t entirely sold on them. The padding isn’t as thick as my other shorts and I found that it was bunching in spots that made me a bit uncomfortable. I knew [...]
